WHO WE ARE and WHAT WE DO

The Lake Region Senior Service, Inc. has been in existence since 2002.  It is a non-profit, service corporation.  It implements the Lake Region Senior Transportation Program.

The Senior Transportation Programs are a pool of volunteer drivers, generally seniors themselves, using their own vehicles, who drive Senior and Disabled Citizens (without other transportation alternatives) to and from medical appointments.  Our drivers are vetted, compassionate and personable.

Unfortunately we cannot provide wheelchair/van service. Clients must be able to transfer themselves in and out of vehicles with minimum "hands-on" assistance.

We can accommodate clients with walkers or canes as long as they are generally ambulatory.

We provide "through-the-door" service. We will escort you to the place in the building where you need to be, and we will be there when your appointment has ended.

Clients call the Program numbers and leave a message as to their need. The Dispatcher will check messages throughout the day and return the call for ride details and confirmation within 24 hours.

This really is a volunteer program.  There is no office and no receptionist. The phone is at a private residence.  We receive about 85 ride requests each month, so it's important to give as much notice as possible - at least one week.  Last minute requests are generally impossible to fill.  The schedule of rides for any given week is made out 2 to 3 days before hand.  We are not a taxi service. There is no pool of drivers sitting around waiting for a call.

We do not drive evenings, weekends, holidays or in unsafe weather. Phone hours are between Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 5:00pm.

Who Qualifies?

There are other transportation programs in Southern Maine which provide free service (Regional Transportation Program, Community Concepts, Western Maine Transportation), however, these are state Medicaid supported programs and clients must have Mainecare as their primary or secondary medical insurance carrier. There are growing numbers of citizens who do not qualify for Mainecare, cannot afford commercial transportation and are without other transportation alternatives.

This is our client base.
